Recruitment’s inspiring story

Anthony Haynes writes: To mark International Women’s Day, we republish a post about Sophie Macpherson, as told by Simona Sikimic (London Loves Business, 11 Oct).

Sikimic tells how Macpherson went from being told there was “no future” for her in the art world to building a recruitment company — SML — that sources employees for many of art’s leading organisations. SML’s clients include Bonham’s, Bloomsbury Auctions, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and the Scottish Gallery.

At FJWilson, we’ve often discussed the story. The phrase “inspiring story” has become a cliché — but in the case of this story, we really do find it inspiring.

To us, the following features stand out:

  • resilience: Macpherson responded to a setback with initiative and energy;
  • ‘just do it’ mentality: evidently Macpherson wasn’t sure whether there was a need for an arts-based recruitment company – so she sent out a hundred enquiry letters and found the answer;
  • ambition and a willingness to ‘scale-up’: the company is now multinational;
  • sheer chutzpah.
