Inclusion in employment for results: an inclusion scorecard

Anthony Haynes writes: As regular readers will know, a focus of FJWilson Talent has been the place in employment practices of inclusion and diversity. Broadly, advocates of greater inclusion take one of two positions:

1. the ethical: employers should support inclusion simply because it’s the right thing to do: inclusion is a matter of human rights and social justice;

2. the commercial: employers should support inclusion because it boosts profits. For example, greater inclusion may produce benefits to the a company through increased innovation, better retention of talent, or more positive stakeholder engagement.

These positions are not incompatible and there are plenty of advocate who hold both views.

Evidently one organisation that argues the commercial case strongly is InclusionINC — the clue is in the name and, in case that’s insufficiently clear, their slogan is “Inclusion is a business strategy”.

Recently InclusionINC have launched their InclusionSCORECARD*, which is intended as a tool to help employers develop an inclusion strategy.

There are four main components (‘quadrants’) to the scorecard:

  1. monitoring and measuring;
  2. building a culture;
  3. rewarding and reinforcing;
  4. external strategies and stakeholder relations.

These categories are not particularly original. What caught my eye about the tool was not its originality (indeed, if it were too original, it would probably not be widely adopted) but rather the stress on measuring — inherent in the term ‘scorecard’, foregrounded in the first quadrant above, and also supported by a number of ‘assessment methodologies‘.

I have no first-hand knowledge on how successful this specific tool is (and guess it would be too early to say) — but do know that, by placing an emphasis on metrics, InclusionINC have removed one of the stumbling blocks encountered by inclusion initiatives. Where such initiatives aren’t measured, they are apt to reduce to mere good intention.
